Hi all, Just tried a new software that the hardware shop that is looking into my GFX problem wanted to use to check my issues, and I must say it works great and for free. Without ever having used it, and with someone on the other side (my dad) with no pc knowlegde at all, I was inside his pc in matter of minutes, full access and not setup required. No problems at all. http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspxAwsome! realy great if you ever need to give someone a hand remotely.

You can configure logmein to auto allow connection over port 80 - so there's no firewall issue stopping you and you can get control over a PC which is un-man.
tbh I haven't tried to configure RDC on a windows XP.. so I wouldn't know what it's like but MSN never ever worked for me.. I had to help my sister recently and as usual (it's been like that for 10 years) MSN remote assistance just hang there for 10 minutes doing nothing...

They typically require attention to specific ports, and some times, more knowledge/time than the remote person is willing to give. I have found that showmypc works very well, works across port 80 - so if they are browsing the internet, this will work. This little app, along with logmein's HAMACHI application, i was able to remote a PC 12 time zones away. Not something that is typically able to be done across the open internet, on what is sometimes dodgy connections. this is not an install, it is a .exe, runs when you click it, you get the secret number - which is communicated to the person you want to remote control your PC, and thats it. very easy and simple to walk a novice/beginner user thru over the phone, and then fix the ailing computer. http://www.showmypc.com

Even over port 80 you can NOT get through a firewall unless you specifically opended it. Edit: that is get through the firewall from ouside to inside. From http://olorinsledge.wordpress.com/2006/ ... er-review/Quote: Teamviewer uses a "middle man" to enable it to bypass firewalls which saves the hassle of configuring your router/modem/firewall. Each side of a Teamviewer connection connects to this middle man, which is a Teamviewer server, and it handles the connection and routing of traffic between the two sides. The traffic is apparently encrypted, according to Teamviewers website, but any time you introduce a middle man, it raises potential security issues. If they are not encrypting the traffic, they could be snooping it etc. In the Trust No One world, this is not an ideal solution. So if security is a major concern for you, perhaps this is not the solution for you. Same goes for showmypc Thay are all basically services running VNC like apps with added conectivity tricks. Where i have access (eg inlaws) i create a random port hole in the firewall and translate that back to vnc. When they need access all they have to do is start VNCand i get in (with a password). Takes a bit of setting up but safe enough as vnc only runs on request.

OK..I re-read about the teamview...then read some more. I am liking it. I'll definitely be passing this along to my buddies here in jax, if they do not already know about it Anyways..
The link you showed, which is what really drew my attention, states that teamview can be setup to run as a local server; set that up at the shop, and have your client installs point to it vice somewhere else; all under your scrutiny / control and Free application...Nice.
thanks for reposting that N4ppy !!

my knowledge of PCs is very limited- i know how to switch them on & off ! - & where to put the petrol But i have been using this Teamview on my PC at work so the guys in Canada can correct the problems i have been getting- it does seem to be very good & trusted which is perhaps even more important.

I use portable Teamviewer , no install required. I put it on any machine I'm expected to support (daughters , in-laws , mooching friends).
And as an added bonus , team view now has an iphone app , so mobile support !! luck me

I've only tested it via wireless network , haven't tried it over 3G yet

I have been using logmein on 4 remote PC's for a while and no problems. Admit the uses are few and far between.
